Originally written in 1609, this work is considered to be one of the earliest examples of science fiction. Domingo Gonsales is a citizen of Spain who flees to the East Indies after killing a man in a duel. On an uncharted island, he discovers a species of giant swan. By attaching several of them to an “Engine,” he is able to eventually travel to the moon, a journey that takes 11 days. He soon finds the inhabitants of the moon, who live a happy and carefree life in a kind of pastoral paradise.
