“Imagine, the letters one has sent out into the world, the letters received back in turn, are like the pieces of a magnificent puzzle. . . . Isn’t there something wonderful in that, to think that a story of one’s life is preserved in some way, that this very letter may one day mean something, even if it is a very small thing, to someone?”

Filled with knowledge that only comes from a life fully lived, The Correspondent is a gem of a novel about the power of finding solace in literature and connection with people we might never meet in person. It is about the hubris of youth and the wisdom of old age, and the mistakes and acts of kindness that occur during a lifetime.

Sybil Van Antwerp has throughout her life used letters to make sense of the world and her place in it. Most mornings, around half past ten, Sybil sits down to write letters—to her brother, to her best friend, to the president of the university who will not allow her to audit a class she desperately wants to take, to Joan Didion and Larry McMurtry to tell them what she thinks of their latest books, and to one person to whom she writes often yet never sends the letter.

Sybil expects her world to go on as it always has—a mother, grandmother, wife, divorcee, distinguished lawyer, she has lived a very full life. But when letters from someone in her past force her to examine one of the most painful periods of her life, she realizes that the letter she has been writing over the years needs to be read and that she cannot move forward until she finds it in her heart to offer forgiveness.

Sybil Van Antwerp’s life of letters might be “a very small thing,” but she also might be one of the most memorable characters you will ever read.

I did not care for this book. It was a very slow read. Thera was not much depth to the characters. I found it terribly boring. It was interesting in the way that it was all letters written to tell a story. I do not recommend the book.

Sybil, the main character, is an old woman. This is one reason why I enjoyed reading her letters, because I’m an old woman and there aren’t a whole lot of novels told from the perspective of a woman who has lived to be old. I found comfort in her acknowledgment that she had made so many mistakes throughout her long life. She had to live with deep and extremely painful regrets. She does go on. She doesn’t give up.

I love the way this story was written and told by the letters. Sybil’s story was at once heartbreaking and redeeming.
  • I liked the book, the style in letters, fact other books were mentioned characters were reading

It was a rather quick read for me so should have retrieved from the library. Aging is definitely a challenge so could relate. Aging has been an inward time for me, lots & lots of contemplating many things. I loved writing letters as a young person, this book has motivated me to write a few. I would recommend this book. Next book less characters, more in depth stories surrounding them. Just a suggestion to Virginia Evans. I did enjoy the book.

What an incredible way to write a novel by doing it all through letters! I loved reading the letters that Sybil and those in her lives exchanged. She lived a life with much heartache but also found happiness. This book is a page turner that is hard to put down. Highly recommend!

I read to escape, so it’s disappointing that a wonderful story is bruised by the need to bash a political party. Especially when that bashing added nothing to the story. For that, three stars is the best I can do.

A wonderful book. Left me quite emotional at the end for reasons I cannot quite explain. Perhaps a poignant reminder that life is short and to try harder with those who matter the most.
