GOODREADS CHOICE AWARD WINNER

“I loved it." —Stephen King

From Edgar Award-finalist Jason Rekulak comes a wildly inventive spin on the supernatural thriller, for fans of Stranger Things and Riley Sager, about a woman working as a nanny for a young boy with strange and disturbing secrets.

Mallory Quinn is fresh out of rehab when she takes a job as a babysitter for Ted and Caroline Maxwell. She is to look after their five-year-old son, Teddy.

Mallory immediately loves it. She has her own living space, goes out for nightly runs, and has the stability she craves. And she sincerely bonds with Teddy, a sweet, shy boy who is never without his sketchbook and pencil. His drawings are the usual fare: trees, rabbits, balloons. But one day, he draws something different: a man in a forest, dragging a woman’s lifeless body.

Then, Teddy’s artwork becomes increasingly sinister, and his stick figures quickly evolve into lifelike sketches well beyond the ability of any five-year-old. Mallory begins to wonder if these are glimpses of a long-unsolved murder, perhaps relayed by a supernatural force.

Knowing just how crazy it all sounds, Mallory nevertheless sets out to decipher the images and save Teddy before it’s too late.

Hidden Pictures kept me hooked from beginning to end. I went into it expecting a paranormal story, and the author did such a great job building that belief—only to completely flip my expectations. The ending delivered one surprise after another, and I loved how everything came together. Highly recommend if you enjoy suspense and clever twists.

I tried to stop my brain from thinking so I could enjoy this more, but I could not. It's just too ridiculous to be good. I could not suspend my thinking brain from objecting to ghosts, possessions, deranged serial killers, and shared fantasies all in one story arc. It was just a big no for me.

Unbelievably great read! Very impressed with the continuity of the story. I did find one bump but I let it pass. It wasn’t important to the story overall. As an oil painter and now mostly portrait artist it was fun to have all the artwork sprinkled throughout. It made the story come alive. No pun intended or is it. I learned a few words of another language and cried at the ending. A book I have thoroughly enjoyed.
  • Slow and too much unnecessary information

The plot twist was compelling, but the story lost momentum and became somewhat uninteresting. While I was engaged in the beginning, the pacing slowed down significantly toward the middle and end
